Where our customers drive in from

Franklin Square sits at the point where four or five villages run into each other, and the people in the chairs on a Saturday reflect that. These are the towns our customers drive in from most often — not a list of where we will cut hair, which is anywhere you are willing to drive from. The road facts that matter when you are deciding whether to make the trip.

Two things are worth knowing before you set off, because they catch people out no matter which direction you are coming from.

Franklin Avenue changes its name at Hempstead Turnpike. North of the Turnpike it is New Hyde Park Road. South of it, it is Franklin Avenue — Nassau County Route C83, which runs unbroken for 3.3 miles down to North Lynbrook. We are on the southern half, about a third of a mile below the Turnpike.

The numbers count up as you head south. Coming down from the Turnpike you pass 169, 175, 191, 197 — and 208 is on your right, on the west side of the street, on the corner of Langdon Street. Coming north from Valley Stream you pass 280, 260, 240 and we are on your left near the top of the road.

Hours: Mon–Sat 9–7, Sun 10–3. Phone: (516) 328-0724.

Garden City

Two point nine miles from Stewart Avenue and Nassau Boulevard; a little over four from the village hall; six and a half from Roosevelt Field. Garden City is big enough that the honest answer to "how far is it" depends on which end of Garden City you are standing in. The usual run is Nassau Boulevard south to Hempstead Turnpike, west a short way, then left onto Franklin Avenue.

Elmont

The shortest hop on the Turnpike. From Covert Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike it is 1.7 miles; from around Elmont Road, about two and a quarter; from Belmont Park, three. You come east on Hempstead Turnpike and turn right onto Franklin Avenue.

If you are down near Dutch Broadway there is a second way in that skips the Turnpike entirely: east on Dutch Broadway, onto Corona Avenue, then north on Franklin Avenue.

West Hempstead

The closest of the towns on this list — 1.9 miles from Hempstead Avenue at Nassau Boulevard, 2.5 from the LIRR station. You come west on Hempstead Turnpike and turn left onto Franklin Avenue, the mirror image of the Elmont approach.

Floral Park

Two and a half to three miles, depending on whether you start at Tulip Avenue or up by Jericho Turnpike. Tulip Avenue east, right onto New Hyde Park Road, and then just keep going — the road becomes Franklin Avenue when it crosses Hempstead Turnpike, and we are three blocks further on at Langdon Street.

Floral Park is a junction station, and Stewart Manor — the nearest LIRR stop to this shop — is the very next station down the Hempstead Branch.

Valley Stream

You are already on our street. Franklin Avenue runs from North Lynbrook, up past Franklin General Hospital at 900 Franklin Avenue, and straight on to Hempstead Turnpike, and it never breaks or changes name on the way. From the hospital it is 1.8 miles; from the LIRR station, 3.6; from Green Acres, 4.4.

The Southern State crosses Franklin Avenue at Exit 16, about a mile and a quarter south of us, with Exit 15 (Corona Avenue) alongside it.

Also nearby

These four do not have pages of their own. They have customers, and they have the same directions problem, so here is what is worth knowing.

Stewart Manor

Stewart Manor is the closest village to the shop of anywhere on this page — 1.6 miles — and Stewart Manor station is the nearest LIRR stop to us of any station on Long Island. Come south down New Hyde Park Road and it turns into Franklin Avenue at the Turnpike. If you are walking from the train, it is about half an hour at a normal pace; most people drive it in four or five minutes.

Why people drive past closer shops

Two reasons, and neither of them is a slogan.

The first is that Gali Khik is a New York State licensed master barber who has been cutting in Franklin Square since 2005, and a master cut here costs $30. That is the whole pitch: the experience at the top of the local range, at the bottom of the local price range.

The second is the walk-in policy. You do not have to plan a haircut around an app. Come in, or call (516) 328-0724.

Directions from each town

  • The Franklin Avenue storefront at dusk, neon sign and vintage barber portraits in the window

    Garden City

    2.9 to 4.1 road miles

Garden City has its own Franklin Avenue — the n40/n41 one by the LIRR station at Seventh Street — which is a different road from the shop's Franklin Avenue (CR C83) in Franklin Square.

  • The Franklin Avenue storefront at dusk, neon sign and vintage barber portraits in the window

    Elmont

    1.7 to 3.0 road miles

Elmont approaches from the west on Hempstead Turnpike (NY 24), so the turn onto Franklin Avenue is a right — the mirror of the West Hempstead approach.

  • The Franklin Avenue storefront at dusk, neon sign and vintage barber portraits in the window

    West Hempstead

    1.9 to 2.5 road miles

West Hempstead is the closest town the shop draws from — 1.9 road miles from Hempstead Avenue at Nassau Boulevard.

  • The Franklin Avenue storefront at dusk, neon sign and vintage barber portraits in the window

    Floral Park

    2.6 to 2.9 road miles

The Floral Park approach is Tulip Avenue east to New Hyde Park Road, then south — and New Hyde Park Road becomes Franklin Avenue where it crosses Hempstead Turnpike.

  • The Franklin Avenue storefront at dusk, neon sign and vintage barber portraits in the window

    Valley Stream

3.2 to 4.4 road miles from the village

Franklin Avenue is Nassau County Route C83, one unbroken road from North Lynbrook to Hempstead Turnpike — Valley Stream customers are already on the shop's street.

New Hyde Park, Malverne, Stewart Manor, Hempstead are all closer than some of these — they are covered on this page rather than on their own, because there is nothing different to say about the drive.
