Trim, shape, or line-up — what to ask for

These are three different jobs. Ask for the wrong one and you get a result you did not want at a price you did not expect.

Maintenance trim

You like the shape, you want the length taken back and the strays off. Ask for a trim "to the same shape, just shorter", and give a guard number if you know it — a #3 beard is about 10 mm, a #2 about 6 mm.

Beard shaping and sculpting

You want the outline changed: the cheek line raised or lowered, the neck line moved, the corners squared or rounded, the moustache brought into proportion. Ask for shaping, and say which way you want the cheek line to go. This is the decision that changes a beard more than length does.

Just the edges: cheek, neck, moustache line. A beard line-up is part of this service. A hairline line-up is a different service at a different price — that is the shape up haircut — $15.

Adding a razor finish

The edges cut with a straight razor rather than a clipper. It gives a harder line than a guard can and it lasts a day or two longer before the outline blurs. Ask for "razor the edges" when you sit down. Traditional straight-razor work is on Gali's specialty list.

Pairing a beard trim with a haircut

A haircut is $30. A beard trim is $15. Booked together in one sitting the beard is shaped to the cut rather than to itself, which is the only way the two lines agree at the sideburn.

How much is a beard trim? $15, on its own or added to a haircut.

How short should I let it get before a shape-up? Grow it past the point you want the outline to sit before the first shaping. A barber can take a cheek line down but cannot put it back.

Can I get the beard lined with a razor? Yes — ask for the edges razored. Straight-razor work is one of Gali's four stated specialties. If what you want is the beard off entirely, that is the hot towel shave — $30.
