What a $30 hot towel shave includes

$30.

A traditional shave is a sequence, not a pass of a blade:

  1. Hot towels to soften the beard and open the skin.
  1. Lather worked in with a brush, not squeezed from a can.
  1. The first pass with the straight razor, with the grain.
  1. Re-lather, and a second pass across or against the grain where the skin will take it.
  1. A cold towel to close the skin, and a finish.

Walk in during any hour we are open — Monday–Saturday 9:00 AM–7:00 PM, Sunday 10:00 AM–3:00 PM — or call (516) 328-0724.

Straight razor, done properly

A straight razor takes the hair off at skin level rather than just below it, which is why it gives a closer result than a cartridge and why it is gentler on skin that reacts to multi-blade razors. It is also why it is a licensed job: New York State licenses barbers to use one, and Gali holds a New York State Master Barber licence.

Who it's for — and who should skip it

It is for anyone who has never had one, anyone with a wedding or an interview in the morning, and anyone whose neck reacts badly to a cartridge razor.

Skip it, or talk to the barber first, if you have active acne, a cold sore, a mole or skin tag in the shave area, or a skin condition being treated. Tell the barber before the towels go on, not after the first pass.

Before your first shave

Come with a day or two of growth — not a week. A straight razor works best on stubble it can catch; a long beard needs taking down first, which is a beard trim — $15 and then a shave. Do not shave at home that morning, and skip aftershave beforehand.

Shave, or a beard trim?

Three things in this shop involve a razor and they are not the same purchase:

  • Hot towel shave — $30. The beard comes off. Hot towels, lather, straight razor.
  • Beard trim — $15. The beard stays. Trimmed, shaped, and razored at the edges if you ask.
  • A razor cut. A haircut technique — the barber textures the ends of your hair with a straight razor instead of scissors. Nothing to do with shaving. It is part of the men's haircut — $30.

Hot towel shave questions

How much is a straight razor shave? $30. That is the whole shave, towels included.

Is a straight razor shave safe? It is a licensed procedure — New York State licenses barbers to use a straight razor, and Gali holds a New York State Master Barber licence. Tell your barber about anything on the skin in the shave area before he starts.

How long does the result last? Longer than a cartridge shave, because the blade takes the hair at skin level in one clean cut rather than dragging and re-cutting it.

Can I have a shave and a haircut in the same visit? Yes — $30 for the haircut plus $30 for the shave, done in one sitting.
