What to ask for

Bring a photo if you have one. If you do not, these are the four things a barber actually needs from you: how short on the sides, whether the sides blend into the top or stop at a line, how much comes off the top, and what you do with it in the morning.

Clipper cut

Ask for a guard number on the sides and a length on top. A #1 is about 3 mm, #2 about 6 mm, #3 about 10 mm, #4 about 13 mm. "Two on the sides, scissor the top, leave the length in front" is a complete instruction. If you want the sides to blend from short to long rather than sit at one length, that is a fade haircut.

Full scissor cut

No clippers anywhere. Ask for it by name — "all scissors, no machine". It takes longer than a clipper cut and it grows out softer, without the hard line a guard leaves. Gali Khik names scissor cutting as one of his four specialties; see classic scissor cut for what one looks like grown in.

Razor cut

A razor cut is a cutting technique — the barber uses a straight razor instead of scissors to thin and texture the ends. It is not a shave. If what you want is a shave, that is the hot towel shave — $30.

Long hair and layering

If you are growing it out, say the target length and the date you are aiming at, and ask for the weight taken out rather than the length. That is the difference between a trim that keeps the plan and one that restarts it.

Who cuts it

Gali Khik, who opened New York Master Barbers in 2005, is a New York State licensed Master Barber and has cut for more than twenty years. Scissor cutting and fades are two of the four things he names as his own work.

Prefer a fade, a shape-up or a beard trim?

These are separate services with separate prices, and asking for the right one saves you money:

  • Sides blended from skin upward rather than one guard length → fade haircuts

Questions about a men's haircut

Do I need an appointment for a haircut? No. Walk in any hour we are open — Monday–Saturday 9:00 AM–7:00 PM, Sunday 10:00 AM–3:00 PM — and you will be taken in turn. Call (516) 328-0724 if you want a specific time.

Should I bring a photo? Yes, and bring one of a head of hair like yours rather than one you like the look of. Hair type decides more of the result than the picture does.
