Where a mid fade starts

A mid fade's shortest point sits between the top of your ear and your temple — roughly halfway up the side of your head. Low, mid and high describe one variable and one only: how high the gradient begins. They say nothing about how short it goes at the bottom, which is why a mid skin fade and a mid taper are both mid fades.

Your ear is the landmark every barber uses, because it is the only fixed point on the side of a head that does not move when you change expression. Low is at or below the top of the ear. Mid is between the top of the ear and the parietal ridge. High is at or above the ridge — the corner where the side of your head turns into the top, which you can find by laying a comb flat on your head and seeing where it lifts off.

Mid fade vs low fade

A mid fade starts roughly 2 to 3 cm higher up the head than a low fade. That single difference changes what the cut does to the shape of your face.

  • A mid fade removes weight at eye level. It narrows the head where people look at you, which makes the hair on top read as taller and the face as longer.
  • A low fade leaves that weight alone. It cleans the perimeter and changes nothing about the silhouette.
  • A mid fade needs re-cutting sooner — 2 to 3 weeks against 3 to 4 — because the short section is larger and sits at the height of a stranger's line of sight.

If you want the perimeter clean without the shape of your head changing, ask for a low taper fade instead.

Mid fade vs high fade

A high fade takes the gradient up past the parietal ridge and onto the side of the crown; a mid fade stops below it. The visible result is that a high fade breaks the head into two distinct shapes — a short one and a long one — while a mid fade keeps the top and sides reading as one continuous shape.

The mid fade is the more forgiving of the two on almost every head, which is why it is the default ask. A high skin fade is a stronger statement and a shorter appointment cycle.

What to ask for

Point at your own head. The word "mid" has a 3 cm tolerance and your finger has none:

"Mid fade please — start it about halfway between my ear and my temple, here. Skin at the bottom, blend up to a two by the time you reach the ridge, and leave two fingers on top. Natural neckline."
DecisionOptionsIn millimetres
Bottom of the gradientskin / #0.5 / #10 / 1.5 / 3 mm
First step up#1 then #1.53 then 4.5 mm
Where it blends out#2 or #3 at the ridge6 or 10 mm
Topscissor length, in fingers or cm—
Necklinenatural / rounded / squared—

When the barber asks "where do you want the line?", the correct answer is a finger on your own head, not a number. There is no agreed measurement for "mid" and there never has been.

One more decision people forget: say whether you want the fade blended out or left with a hard line. "Blend it high, no hard line" and "give me a hard line at the ridge" are two different haircuts and a barber will not guess which you meant.

Tops that work with a mid fade

A mid fade has a defined upper boundary, so whatever sits above it reads as a separate shape — which means the top is a real decision rather than an afterthought. Four that work:

  • A mid-length messy top, 5–8 cm, point-cut for separation. The default current ask, and the most forgiving if you do nothing to it in the morning.
  • A textured crop worn forward. The fringe balances the height the fade adds.
  • A quiff or a comb-over with a hard part. The mid fade gives the part somewhere to end.
  • Curls left long on top. The contrast between a tight gradient and loose curl is the point.

How often

A mid fade holds its shape for 2 to 3 weeks. That is one week less than a low taper, and the reason is geometric rather than anything to do with how fast your hair grows: the short section is bigger, so there is more of it to blur.

The tell is the step. When you can see where one guard ended and the next began, the blend has closed and the cut is due. On a mid fade this shows above the ear first.
